Wednesday June 15th- First day of the “Fling”
The day began at 9am, as everyone walked through the dewy wet grass. We were all eager to start the Fling! We quickly set up the chairs and listened as Mr. Hinrichs went over the Fling rules and gave out the play tickets. When all had agreed and understood the rules, Mr. H gave us the tour of the property, showing us the boundaries, due to the house construction. We all then proceeded back to the chairs to begin our Homeric Read-a-Thon. As we sat and listened about the rage of Achilles, with the different readers’ tones and voices to match the characters, laughs were shared by all. As people like Mr. H, Tillman Gressitt, Daniel Parker, Michael Taylor, Tim Jackson, Kylee Danielson, Jensen Near, Francis Pedraza, Tammy Lang and Chelsea Nygaard read, our thoughts were on the interesting way each person portrayed the story, as the trees swayed above us.
We had a short break, so that lunch could be eaten and then it was back to The Odyssey. The day was supposed to end at 4pm, but the reading was yet to be finished, so Mr.H made the decision to continue for one more hour giving us the option of staying or leaving.
That night was the ball practice. As we all found partners and lined up for the Virginia Reel, the band warmed up and Elizabeth Aymin began to teach us the steps. As we went through the dances, I do believe everyone had a great time laughing and talking with their partners and those around them.
When the dancing was done, it was time for the annual singing. Mr.H put us in our voice parts of Bass, Tenor, Alto, or Soprano. We sang Beautiful Savior, Dona Nobis Pacem, Lo How a Rose Ere Blooming, and the Doxology. “Good nights” and “See you later” were shared by all as we went back to our homes or hotels for the end of the first night.
